Ray Wallis - Eskdale, The Lake District, 1957
Aged eighteen, in October 1957, I spent a month on an Outward Bound course at Eskdale Green which proved to be one of the most influential and enabling experiences of my life, giving me confidence to succeed in my career, and enjoy my leisure time to the full.
This was my first introduction to mountains and serious walking, and has shaped my life ever since, leading me to make many trips over the years to the Lakes, and many other mountainous parts of the world. I also became involved with my local Ramblers' Association Area. of which I am now a Vice-President, leading walks and campaigning for walkers' rights and access.
In 1984 I completed my ascent of the 214 "Wainwrights", and in 2007 climbed Scafell Pike on the 50th anniversary of first climbing it with O.B.M.S.
Now, at 76, I am still walking, backpacking and camping and will forever be grateful to Outward Bound for introducing me to the wonderful world of these outdoor activities, widening my horizons and enriching my life.
Thank you Outward Bound.
