John Wilford - Ullswater, The Lake District, 1956
I was on course U18 at Ullswater in 1956 aged 16. I was in Whymper patrol under George Fisher who ran the Keswick Mountain rescue team. While we were there the army arrived and built a pontoon for us to run along to jump in the lake for our compulsay morning dip. Prior to that 80 naked boys had to creep into the water across uneven stones - a chilly experience since it was Easter and there was a nip of frost in the air.
