Glenn Abbassi - Eskdale, The Lake District, 1992
At the age of 49 I 'won' a course in a Soroptimist raffle and, somewhat concerned, found myself with 8 considerably younger participants. However, from the first night, spent under canvas, through all the physical challenges, way out of my comfort zone, it was a marvellous experience, and wind, rain and snow failed to dampen the spirits of a highly supportive group. My personal report commented that although I remained quiet and reserved, my actions spoke volumes about determination and courage. I also felt motivated by the responsibility of being a woman, and the oldest participant, but when total success was achieved, I could relax and reflect on the scale of my achievements. I can't praise our tutor Jim Dominy highly enough for imbuing me with a glowing sense of enthusiasm and high endeavour. (His achievements in the light of the cross he bore made me marvel even more at his positive thinking and commitment to others.)
