Derek Saunders - Aberdovey, Wales, 1946

I had never participated in a five mile walking race before. so when I found myself in front at the halfway stage, I was quite astonished! encouraged by a car load of officers and instructors, I managed to win the race in the time of 48 mins and 23 seconds. they said that at one point I was moving at nearly 8 mph, which was quite good for a 16 year old. at that time this was the second fastest ever time. it appears that the fastest time ever done at Aberdovey was on the previous course by none other than chris brasher of 4 minute mile pacemaker fame!!!!
