Barry Jolly - Aberdovey, Wales, 1970
Well done Outward Bound!
I attended course u147J 1970 March to April...
Breeeee it was very cold with snow and rain upon the fells; we camped out in blizzards but also had lovely sunshine at times. ULLSWATER is a lovely place....
My team was Shackleton and my instructor was Lester Davies. My fondest memory of him was leading our team to the top of HELVELLYN, thick with snow and ice, but it was a clear day and the view on top was brill! Looking back across Striding Edge towards Ullswater...
I feel that Wordsworth's famous poem is a fitting tribute to my OB story, as he composed this poem whilst walking the shores of Ullswater in early spring as the daffodils were blooming - which was also the time of year I did my OB course and I remember the daffodil blooms so well:
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze
(I like this version of the poem I found on YouTube...)
Now forty two years on, I still remember with a smile all those friends I met...
My respects to you all,
Barry Jolly
