Andrew Somes - Eskdale, The Lake District, 1985
My experience at Outward Bound has lasted a lifetime. The group I was in was co-ed "Nansen" with Jonti as the leader, and I had the distinction of being the only "Yank" in the whole centre. I'm on the far right in the photo. My father, who attended in the 40s, and sister who attended in 1980 provided plenty of prior knowledge such that I, fortunately, knew what to expect, inlcuding the "dip in the tarn," something my father boasted of my entire youth. My most challenging experience was rock climbing to higher points with our guide "Andrew," and Andrea from Ireland. The solo camp out was very memorable, as was having to look after our buddy Simon who went into a coma (really!!) while others ran miles for help. Wastwater (sp?) kayaking!! The Fete. removing rocks from farmland. the cross-country run!! So many wonderful character-building lessons to recall!! Thanks Dad!!
